What Is NDIS Short Term Accommodation?

Short term accommodation (STA) is NDIS funding for a short stay away from your usual carers, with support, so you and your family get time apart. It pays for the support you normally need and standard accommodation, generally for up to 14 days at a time and 28 days a year. It's often called respite, and the NDIA has also called it short term respite.

It's for participants who live with their family or carers, or get daily drop-in support from them, and get more than 6 hours a day of disability-related support. See who can get STA and how many days are funded.

Stays can be in a respite house, a cottage or cabin, a hotel or a host's home. Guests pay for their own meals and activities: here's what STA covers.

How it works

Three Steps to Talking With a Provider

  1. Tell Us What's Needed

Who the stay is for, their age, the kind of stays you want, the support they need and when. About two minutes.

  2. We Find a Provider

We pass your details to one registered short term accommodation provider who may have a stay that suits.

  3. They Get in Touch

The provider contacts you to talk about the support, the dates, the house and what it will cost.

Your details only go to the provider we match you with. If they can't help, we'll find someone who can. More about how it works

Where a Stay Can Happen

STA can be used in any stationary setting that suits the support you need, generally in your home state. It isn't for holidays, cruises or tours.

  • Friends at a table in a garden courtyard, a woman in a wheelchair among them, as another woman wheels a man in a wheelchair over to join them

    Respite Houses

A house set up for short stays, with your own room and support workers on hand day and night.

  • Three friends chatting and laughing at an outdoor picnic table, one of them in a wheelchair

    Group Stays and Camps

A few days away with other people, in cabins or a lodge, with the support you need to join in.

  • A man in a wheelchair beside a timber platform among trees, looking out at a lake

    Cabins, Cottages and Hotels

Standard accommodation anywhere stationary, with your own support workers.

Time Apart That Works Both Ways

The NDIA describes STA as mutually rewarding time apart: a break for the people who support you, and a change of scene for you.

  • A person in a wheelchair on the sand, watching swimmers in the sea

    Try New Things

STA can support you while you try a new activity or meet new people.

  • A young woman with Down syndrome smiling in a pool with a pink inflatable ring

    Keep Doing What You Enjoy

It's funded at the level of support you usually need, so you can keep doing the things you normally do.

  • A woman in a wheelchair on a path among tall trees

    A Break for Everyone

Your family or carers get time to rest, so they can keep supporting you.

For Participants and Families

STA just added to the plan, a carer who needs a break, or school holidays coming up? Tell us once and we'll pass it to a registered provider, instead of you ringing around.

For Support Coordinators

Send the age, the kind of stay, the support ratio and any high intensity or behaviour support needs. We pass it to a registered STA provider and let you know who's picking it up.

How We Choose Providers

We only pass your details to providers who meet all of these.

  • Registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission
  • Offer short term accommodation for the person's age group
  • May have a stay that suits, now or coming up
  • Agree to contact you quickly, and we check that they did

How STA Is Funded

STA is flexible funding in the Core budget of an NDIS plan. Providers claim hourly items for the support and a daily item for the accommodation, up to the maximums in the NDIS Pricing Schedule. Guests pay for their own meals, activities and usually transport.

Questions People Ask

Does it cost anything to use this service?

No. It's free for you. Providers pay us when we introduce them to someone, which is how we keep it free. Providers can't charge NDIA-managed or plan-managed participants more than the NDIS price limits.

Are you the NDIS, or a respite provider?

Neither. shorttermaccommodation.net.au is an independent service that connects people with registered short term accommodation providers. We're not part of the NDIA or the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and we don't run houses or provide support.

Do I need STA in my NDIS plan first?

It helps, because STA is paid from the Core budget. If you're still asking for it, get in touch anyway and tell us where things are at. Our guide to getting STA in your plan explains the steps.

Do you list respite vacancies?

No. We pass what you need to registered providers, one at a time, so they can tell you about stays that may suit.

What if the provider can't help?

We pass your details to another registered provider, one at a time, up to 3 in total. Your details never go out to a group of providers at once.

Is this emergency accommodation?

No. If a carer suddenly can't continue, call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737 at any time about emergency respite. If someone is at immediate risk of harm, call 000.
