NDIS Respite and Short Term Accommodation Providers
Short term accommodation (STA) providers run respite houses, cottages, group stays or host arrangements, and give guests the support they need during a stay. You choose your provider. If your plan is NDIA-managed, the provider must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. You can check registration on the Commission's provider register before you book.
What Does an STA Provider Do?
Provides the stay and the support: a room, and workers to help with everyday activities at the level you usually need.
- Talks with you about the support you need and the dates
- Agrees the supports and the cost, ideally in a written service agreement
- Provides standard accommodation, or supports you in a host's home or your own
- Gives personal care and help with everyday activities during the stay
- Supports you to take part in activities, if you want to
- Claims from your plan, or invoices you or your plan manager
Does an STA Provider Have to Be Registered?
It depends on how your plan is managed, and on the supports you need.
| Situation | Registered provider needed? |
|---|---|
| NDIA-managed funding | Yes. You can't use unregistered providers. |
| Plan-managed or self-managed funding | No. You can choose registered or unregistered providers. |
| Intensive and complex behaviour supports | Yes. The provider must be registered and follow the behaviour support and restrictive practice rules. |
| Children | Workers need Working with Children or Working with Vulnerable People checks under state and territory law. |
We only pass enquiries to providers registered with the NDIS Commission, whatever your plan management. See how we choose providers.
Looking for a Stay?
We'll connect you with a registered STA provider who may have a stay that suits.
How Do You Check a Provider?
Search the NDIS Commission's provider register by business name, legal name or ABN.
Choose the registration status "Approved" to see providers that are currently registered. The same register shows providers whose registration has been suspended or revoked, and the Commission lists banning orders and other compliance decisions separately.
What Should You Ask Before Booking?
Whether they can give the same level of support the person gets at home, on the dates you need.
- Who else will be staying, and how old they are
- How many workers are on overnight, and whether night support is active or a sleepover
- Whether workers are trained for any high intensity supports the person needs
- Whether they'll follow the person's behaviour support plan, and who is authorised to use any restrictive practice
- What the room and bathroom are like, and what accessibility features there are
- What a stay will cost, item by item, and what meals and activities cost on top
- Whether a regular support worker can come along

Questions People Ask
How do I find NDIS respite providers near me?
Ask your support coordinator, search the NDIS Commission's provider register, or tell us what you need and we'll pass it to a registered STA provider who may have a stay that suits, one at a time.
Can I use more than one STA provider?
Yes. You choose your providers, and you can use your STA funding with different providers for different stays.
Do I need a service agreement for STA?
It isn't required, but the NDIS recommends one when you start with a new provider. It sets out the supports, costs and what happens if something goes wrong.
Are you an STA provider?
No. We're an independent service that connects people with registered STA providers. We don't run houses or provide support.
