Short TermAccommodation

Questions and Answers

shorttermaccommodation.net.au is a free, independent service that connects people on the NDIS with registered short term accommodation providers. Here are the questions people ask most, about STA itself and about how we work. Our guides go into each topic in more depth.

About STA

What is STA?

Short term accommodation: NDIS funding for a short stay away from your usual carers, with support, so you and your family or carers get time apart. It covers support and standard accommodation.

Who can get STA?

Participants who live with their family or carers, or get daily drop-in support from them, and get more than 6 hours a day of disability-related support from them. At least one extra factor has to apply too.

How many days of STA can I get?

The NDIA generally funds up to 28 days a year, for up to 14 days at a time. More can be funded in exceptional circumstances.

What does a stay cost?

The support and standard accommodation are paid from the Core budget, up to the NDIS price limits. Guests pay for their own meals, activities and usually transport.

Is STA the same as respite?

In the NDIS, yes. STA is how the NDIS funds respite stays for participants. In October 2025 the NDIA said it would call it short term respite.

Using This Service

What does this service do?

We connect NDIS participants, families and support coordinators with registered short term accommodation providers who may have a stay that suits. You answer a few questions, we pass your details to one suitable provider, and they contact you.

Does it cost anything?

No. It's free for you. Providers pay us for introductions, which is how we keep it free.

Are you part of the NDIS?

No. We're an independent service. We're not part of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) or the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and we don't run houses or provide support.

How soon will someone contact me?

It depends on the provider. We follow up to check you were contacted. If you haven't heard back, email us and we'll chase it.

Do you cover my area?

We take enquiries from every state and territory. Put the postcode where the person lives in the form.

Can I use this if STA isn't in the plan yet?

Yes, tell us where things are at. We'll also point you to how to get STA in the plan.

Is this an emergency service?

No. If a carer suddenly can't continue, call Carer Gateway on 1800 422 737 at any time. If someone is at immediate risk of harm, call 000.

Your Details

Who sees my details?

Only the registered STA provider we match you with. If they can't help, we pass your details to another registered provider, one at a time, up to 3 in total. Nobody else gets them for their own marketing.

Can I change my mind?

Yes. Email hello@shorttermaccommodation.net.au and we'll stop passing your details on and let any provider we've introduced you to know.

Why do you ask about support needs?

So the provider can tell straight away whether they can give the support the person needs, and you don't have to explain everything twice. We ask for your consent first because this is sensitive information.

For Support Coordinators and Providers

Can I refer a participant?

Yes. Use the referral form. Please check the participant, or their nominee, agrees to the referral first. We'll let you know who's picking it up.

I'm an STA provider. Can I join?

If you're registered with the NDIS Commission and run respite houses, group stays or host arrangements, register your interest on the providers page and we'll be in touch.
